Most patients with brackets also have their responsibilities to avoid things like hard candy, which can be difficult for some. These are hard, very sticky candy which could break brackets, bend wires and may contribute to cavities. Good hygiene should also be maintained before, during and after treatment. Even when active treatment is over, patients should stay committed to maintain their beautiful hard earned smile. Compliance is very critical, patients have to wear their retainers on their orthodontist’s recommended schedule, which is different for everyone. The result, when patients do follow their orthodontist’s plan, it is usually a long-term stability of their beautiful, functional smile.

The word “Lingual” comes from Latin and it means “on the side towards the tongue”. Lingual orthodontics refers to the correction of misaligned teeth by means of fixed appliances (braces) bonded to the inner side of the teeth instead of the usual position. As a result, correct tooth positioning can be achieved without the braces being seen.

There are at least some advantages in choosing lingual treatment compared to the classic one. As the inner side of the teeth of the patient is more robust and less susceptible to decalcification and caries, with lingual orthodontics there is less likelihood of permanent damage to the teeth than with labial orthodontics where the braces are worn on the outer side of the teeth. If white spots or traces of decalcification appears on the outer side of the teeth even before therapy has started, lingual orthodontics is definitely the method of choice for these types of problems.

These days there had been a great increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment. And a lot of young adults are realizing the impact of a great smile and deciding to seek treatment.
For some, treatment is easier and thanks to innovative brackets designs, light wire technology, brackets that can attach to the back of teeth, and clear, tooth-moving, removable appliances. Most patients – adolescents and adults – wear braces 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the problem, dentists’ says.

Many suffer from discomfort and even pain in the jaw which may be attributed to too good your care for your teeth. Teeth as we know come first at wisdom teeth or baby teeth which eventually fall out giving way to our permanent set of teeth that is designed to last us our lifetime. But the fast-paced lifestyle of today along with the many stuff we call junk food that we all crave for, these teeth wear out prematurely, sometimes too early.
Back to the wisdom tooth, there comes a time in a child’s life (normally as we enter adolescence) when the permanent teeth have to come out and perfect baby teeth may impede the process resulting in impacted tooth. Sadly, this is only visible with x-ray’s which can give a clear view of the tooth that may even be growing horizontally causing pain as it pushes against the roots and nerves of the perfect baby teeth. It can be corrected easily but it may involve the extraction of some of the baby teeth to give the permanent teeth room to grow into taking away the pressure on the nerves thus the pain.

One of the first things an orthodontist will do is take X-rays and molds of your teeth. To give you an idea on how this works, archwired.com has listed the procedure down for you:
You usually need to get panoramic x-rays of your mouth, plus a full set of x-rays of individual teeth.
Photographs of your face, teeth, and mouth may also be taken, so look nice on x-ray day! Those photographs will be part of your permanent file!
The orthodontist will take molds of your teeth. This feels like a mouthful of silly putty and doesn’t last long (30 seconds each). They do the uppers, then the lowers. You often have your choice of flavor for the putty stuff. It’s no big deal. If you have an easy gag reflex, just try your best to relax during the process.

There is no age limit, provided the periodontal tissues are still fundamentally intact, that is the teeth are still relatively firmly fixed in the bone. It is also quite common to believe that braces are only suitable for children and adolescents. People tend to think “It’s too late for me anyway”, but they are often mistaken because even if you are a grown up adult you can still have this kind of treatment.
Moreover, even patients in their sixties can be treated efficiently with fixed lingual appliances.
