The word “Lingual” comes from Latin and it means “on the side towards the tongue”. Lingual orthodontics refers to the correction of misaligned teeth by means of fixed appliances (braces) bonded to the inner side of the teeth instead of the usual position. As a result, correct tooth positioning can be achieved without the braces being seen.

Dentures are actually helpful to those who have a lot of teeth gaps. If you are not familiar with the other procedures and wouldn’t want to experiment (yes, there are some people who are like that), then might as well settle for this old yet handy type of teeth reparation. Although you’ll get a lot benefits when using dentures (cheaper than the others, teeth that look brand new etc.), the costs outweigh the benefits. You have to put paste every day (products like Fixodent) to keep them attached. Also, you can no longer eat the things you used to love before like corn fritters or gnaw on spare ribs with special sauce your wife cooks for the kids every Sunday etc.

There are at least some advantages in choosing lingual treatment compared to the classic one. As the inner side of the teeth of the patient is more robust and less susceptible to decalcification and caries, with lingual orthodontics there is less likelihood of permanent damage to the teeth than with labial orthodontics where the braces are worn on the outer side of the teeth. If white spots or traces of decalcification appears on the outer side of the teeth even before therapy has started, lingual orthodontics is definitely the method of choice for these types of problems.

One of the major factors that cause tooth decay is the over consumption of sugar. This is especially evident in children who loose their milk teeth early due to eating too much sweets. It’s okay (although still ugly) to have your kids’ milk teeth ruined as the permanent set replace them anyway. But once you have your permanent teeth, the damage from sugary sweet foods will also make the damage to your pearly whites permanent.

When you eat sugary foods or drink sodas frequently throughout the day, the enamel that protects your teeth is constantly exposed to acids. Hard candies, cough drops, and breath mints that contain sugar are especially harmful because they dissolve slowly in your mouth. Many experts suggest that you take a 3-hour break between eating foods containing sugar.

babyteethAs parents, we tend to start kids early on teeth care, sometimes too much leading to orthodontic problems in later life. Crowding, impacted teeth and other alignment problems due to so healthy a set of baby teeth, the permanent teeth cannot bud out and often result in more costs to correct them. Though good, it is normal for kids to lose teeth and this gives way to stronger adult permanent teeth which is part of the process.
The uncontrollable biting and gnawing, babies go through as their baby teeth come out is sign that teeth problems can be indeed very painful for such a small body. Too much care often results from parents who have had little or no care try to help kids maintain their healthy set of teeth for the future avoiding problems they have had when they were young.
