Parents must observe their children for habits such as lip-biting and thumb-sucking, which can result to impaired oral and facial development. Children should start having an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Some orthodontic problems maybe inherited (crowded teeth, excess space between teeth, protruding teeth, extra or missing teeth and jaw growth problems, etc.) while some are result from thumb or finger-sucking, mouth breathing, mouth disease, abnormal swallowing, poor dental hygiene, the early or late loss of baby teeth,lastly accidents or poor nutrition. There are a lot of innovative treatments which includes brackets that is attached to the back of the teeth, light wires and clear, tooth-moving, removable appliances. But some treatments may not be appropriate for all patients. And the average length of treatment is 1to2 years.
